Photo Gallery   Penny and I in New York - Day 1 We're done with day 1 and it was everything we expected and more! I was lucky enough to sit by 2 of the coolest and funniest guys on the plane on my way here so the flight was nice and quick. Their names are AJ (Adrian sp?) and David. AJ was exhausted and delirious after finishing final exams and papers, and David on the other hand was bursting with hilarious dry humored stories. I'll see AJ in Hollywood one day and I think David should do motivational speeches. I hope their spontaneous trip to NY is a good one. Penny and I's flights got in about the same time and we hopped in a cab and headed to the DoubleTree Hotel on Lexington Ave and 51st. We're impressed with our little room. It's nice and clean and we have a street view. We crack the window so the room gets nice and cold! After getting situated (and the room sanitized ---- I'm here with my clean friend, Penelope. ha!), we bundled up and headed out onto the streets. Oh my goodness, can we say... buttload of people!!! It was like Mardi Gras without the alcohol. The air here smells like sausage and cigarette smoke... and I love it! I keep telling Penny that I can't wait to get some street food. Those little vending carts are on every corner. Brings me back to New Orleans... the Lucky Dogs. Since Penny has been such an awesome planner, we walked right over to the Broadway area and picked up our tickets that we had purchased online for the Greyline Holiday Bus Tour. We had to wait for the bus in a huge line that wrapped around the crowded sidewalk, but it was worth the wait to sit up on top. We sat in the very back seat on top of the bus, and our tour guide was a big NYer who was really cheerful and fun. We’ve already found that it’s true what they say about New Yorkers being mean and grumpy, but it wasn’t the case with him. It ended up getting REALLY COLD, but it was that good ski weather kind of cold. It reached freezing temperatures during our tour, and it would be really windy when we were on certain streets. Mind over matter. You just wouldn't believe the amount of people and cabs and buses EVERYWHERE!!! I really didn't take too many pictures from up there, because I wasn't able to stand up while the bus was moving. I'll take some more while we're walking around one of these nights. We passed the Trump Tower where the Apprentice is filmed, the Dakota hotel where Lennon was shot, Tavern on the Green, Central Park, Times Square. We saw the big Christmas tree in front of the Rockefeller Center, and of course all of these places were decorated with tons of Christmas lights and decorations. Lord & Taylor had their store front windows done with the most intricate Christmas displays. Macy's windows were even better!! I didn't get pictures of them tonight, but I hope to take some of each window on another night. Our tour guide said that Saturday nights during this time are just madness with all the people, so I'm really hoping that the rest of our stay will have a few less people on the streets. By the end of the bus tour, my toes and Penny's legs were numb, so we got back on the streets and headed straight to the ESPN cafe in Times Square. Tonight they announced the Heisman (sp?) winner so it was packed in there and we had to wait about an hour to be seated. We were glad to be out of the cold though. Of course we were both about to fall over from hunger, so when our nachos came out, Penny and I thought they were the best nachos we had ever had. Then we both had hamburgers. I also had some coffee, and it ended up being Starbucks coffee, so Lana was a happy girl. Our server was horrible though… already missing the Southern charm. We had thawed out by then, so we headed across the street to the subway station, and we each bought a 7-day subway pass for only $24. I was pretty impressed by that. Then we got on the S Train that took us to 51st street and when we came up from the stairway, we were right at the front door of our hotel! How convenient!! We're able to get wireless for about $11/day so I figure it's worth it for my little diaries and pictures each day. It seems to be hit or miss though with the connection. Bummer. Ohhhh yea, one more thing. As we were about to go through the revolving door into the hotel, we see a guy by a cab freaking out and cursing and having a tantrum. Total people-watching material. Loved every minute of it. I thought it was an irate tourist, but it was the cab driver freaking out cause somebody puked in the back seat of his cab. Anyway, Penny wasn't as amused as I was. Alright, Penny's out of the shower. I've been sitting here grooving out to Penelope's college booty music. I'm sooooooooo sleepy. What?? What is this I'm hearing?????###!!!!! The Aggie War Hymn. It's Penny's. Don't blame me. ... as she sits here in her purple and gold LSU t-shirt. Somethin' aint right. Gotta go take a shower. We're getting the tired giggles. Check ya latuh!
